What makes your Stepkid(s) tick? What makes them come alive?
These are great questions to ask. If we are to become a better StepParent, we must learn to read our Stepkids—looking under the surface and between the lines to learn more about them.
I wish Stepkids came with a manual. It sure would make co-parenting easier, wouldn’t it?!
Unfortunately, there is no manual (I am working on it)—we’ve got to learn on the job as we go. And there’s great adventure in that.
Ask good questions to help you understand your Stepkid better.
Here are some examples to get you started:
What makes you feel really happy?
What makes you feel really sad?
How can I help you feel loved?
What’s your favorite thing in the whole world to do?
What do you like about our family?
What don’t you like about our family?
And the list doesn’t have to stop there! Let these questions lead to more. Before you know it you’ll be even more connected to your Stepkid.
